Fernando Rendón, Two poems.

Versions by Sam Hamill & Esteban Moore.

1

The earth resumes its shift. Everything moves and is still.
You aren’t ready. Everything surrounds and cradles
you as if you were a baby. Danger bestows its lavish
care. An avaricious prudence lashes out. You’re shaken
by the tides. You get dizzy. Your strength flows away.
Suddenly everything is toxic. The world is toxic. Air and
blood are toxic. Blood drags stones as it rushes away. Our thoughts
are toxic. The great architecture of your knowledge of reality,
zealously built, crumbles in thunderclaps. You
know nothing. Nothing can be avoided. Infrahuman worlds
drink you, inhale you, absorb you, transform you into their
essence, their juice, their blood, all in a dream. Death chews
you. The kingdom of shadows digests you. You are its
hallucination. You are tied to the post of your own
end. You must struggle. And die till you empty yourself
of your own death.

El desplazamiento de la tierra se reinicia. Todo se
mueve y es. No estás preparado.
estruendo. No sabes nada. No puedes
evitar nada.
El
reino de las sombras te digiere. Eres
su sustancia alucinatoria. Estás atado al poste de
tu fin. Tú tienes que luchar. Debes morir hasta
vaciarte de tu muerte.

2

Do you know how much a dead man weighs? To die
you must forget speech: words die first. Suddenly you
know a great deal about heaviness. Your own weight is that
of a dead man, heavy as a cliff, heavy as the world.
Your body is tumbled, motionless, under solemn heavens,
crushed by a strange force of gravity. The temperature rises
and falls without control. The climate is within you. We must die
to inhale the morning of our rebirth, empty the old wineskin
and fill it with the new wine. We thought we knew, but
we are not the Earth without a conscience. Experimenting, the
certainty of being dead bodies who did not want to learn how
to live, dead who did not keep their word, dead without words.
And the perception of being the Earth that dies and lives
without pause. It’s the spirit that establishes the limits.

nuevo. Sabernos pensamiento de no ser
la tierra sin conciencia. Experimentar la certeza
de ser muertos que no hemos querido
aprender a vivir, muertos sin palabra,
sin palabras. O la percepción de ser la tierra
que muere y vive sin pausa. Es el espíritu
el que establece los límites.
